Where Do PDF Downloads Go on iPhone? Here's Where to Look
You tapped Download and the PDF vanished. It's almost always in the Files app, and when it isn't, it was probably never saved in the first place.

You tapped Download, the PDF opened for a second, and now it's nowhere. So where do PDF downloads go on iPhone? Almost always into the Files app, in a folder called Downloads, either on the phone itself or in iCloud Drive. The fastest way to find yours is to open Files and search for it. Everything below works the same on an iPad.
The quickest way: open Files and search
Skip the folder hunting at first. Files can find the PDF for you.
- Open the Files app. (It's the blue folder icon. Can't spot it? Swipe down on the Home Screen and type "Files".)
- Tap Recents at the bottom. Anything you downloaded or opened lately is near the top.
- Not there? Tap the search field at the top and type part of the file's name. If you don't remember the name, typing "pdf" narrows it down.
You can also search from the Home Screen: swipe down from the middle of the screen and type the file's name. Files on your phone show up in those results along with apps and messages.
The Downloads folder, where Safari saves
When you download a PDF in Safari, it goes to a Downloads folder. To browse it:
- Open Files and tap Browse.
- Under Locations, tap iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
- Open the Downloads folder.
Which of the two? Safari has a setting for that. Open the Settings app and look for Safari's Downloads option (on recent iOS versions it's under Apps, then Safari). It shows where Safari saves files, and you can change it to iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or another folder you'd rather use. If you're not sure, check both places.
One thing to know about iCloud Drive: a file there may need a moment to download before it opens, so if you're offline it might not open at all. Files saved On My iPhone are always right there.
Not in Downloads? It may never have been saved
This is the one that trips everybody up. Tapping a PDF in an email, a text or a chat usually just opens it for reading. Nothing gets saved. The PDF stays inside the app it came from, and when you close it, it's back where it was: in that email or that conversation, not in Files.
So go back to where it came from:
- Mail: open the email again and tap the attachment.
- Messages: open the conversation. Tapping the person's name at the top shows the photos, links and documents they've sent, which is quicker than scrolling.
- WhatsApp and other chat apps: open the chat and find the document.
- A link on a website: if the PDF only opened in Safari and you never downloaded it, open the link again.
That last one catches a lot of people. When you tap a link to a PDF, Safari usually just shows it, like any other page. You're reading it, not downloading it. If the site has its own Download button, that sends the file to your Downloads folder. If it doesn't, the Share button works on the open PDF too.
Then keep a copy. With the PDF open, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up) and choose Save to Files. Pick a folder, tap Save, and now it really is on your phone. In Messages you can also press and hold the attachment to get the same options.
Two other places PDFs end up:
- Apple Books. If you chose to open a PDF in Books, it lives in your Books library, not in Downloads. Open Books, go to your Library, and look in your collections for PDFs.
- Chrome. Chrome on iPhone keeps its own downloads, separate from Safari's. Look for Downloads in Chrome's menu, or in Files, check for a Chrome folder under On My iPhone.
Make it easy to find next time
When you use Save to Files, you choose the folder. Pick one you'll remember instead of accepting whatever's selected. A folder called "Receipts" or "School" beats digging through Downloads in six months.
To give a file a name you'll recognize, press and hold it in Files and tap Rename. Something like "lease 2026" is a lot easier to search for than "document (3).pdf". The same menu has Move, if you want to clear things out of Downloads.
PDFs you make with PrintFriendly
If you save web pages as PDFs with the PrintFriendly Safari extension on your iPhone or iPad, they go where any other Safari download goes. When you save, PrintFriendly opens a tab that says Your file is downloading. You can close that tab, and the PDF is in Safari's downloads, which means the Downloads folder in Files that Safari's setting points to.
Found the PDF and want to read it in your browser? Our PDF Reader opens it there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone not showing PDF files?
Usually the PDF was opened but never saved, so it's still sitting in the email or chat it came from. If you did save it, check both On My iPhone and iCloud Drive in Files, and check Books if you opened it there.
Where do PDFs from text messages go on iPhone?
Nowhere, until you save them. They stay in the Messages conversation. Open the PDF there, tap the Share button and choose Save to Files to keep a copy you can find later.
How do I find downloads on my iPad?
The same way as on an iPhone. Open the Files app and look in the Downloads folder, which is under On My iPad or iCloud Drive. Searching in Files works there too.
How do I change where Safari saves downloads on iPhone?
Open the Settings app and find Safari's Downloads setting (on recent iOS versions it's under Apps, then Safari). You can pick iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or another folder.
